Description

Berkeley Chinese Students and Scholars Association (BCSSA) is a student organization at University of California, Berkeley. It is a non-profit and non-political organization dedicated to promoting social, intellectual and cultural activities for Chinese students and scholars. The members include undergraduates, graduates, visiting scholars, and exchange students. The organization has more than 2000 registered members, and is rapidly growing.

Additionally, the organization has nearly 100 members working as staff in eight different departments: Secretariat, Department of Information and Technology, Department of Academics, Department of Public Relations, Department of Finance, Department of Career Development, Department of Social Activities, and Department of Cultural Affairs.

Activities

Each year BCSSA holds the Fei Cheng Wu Rao, a blind date activity which parodies a popular TV reality show in China. Anyone is welcome to sign up, and 10 males and 10 females are chosen to participate. All the ladies sit on the stage while each male takes turn coming up to them and introducing themselves. If the women would like to know the guy better, she will leave the torch in her hand on. After 4 rounds, if there is only one torch left on, then a match is made.

Also BCSSA works with the Berkeley Chinese Forum, where scholars from every country can express their views regarding the current and former affairs of China. The forum is held every Friday with a specific theme each week.

Finally, BCSSA holds seminars for Chinese entrepreneurs and scholars who come to UC Berkeley for short visits. So far nearly 50 entrepreneurs and 100 scholars have held seminars on campus.

Discount Card

For $10, BCSSA members can purchase a discount card that will allow them to get discount at more than twenty places, including restaurants, entertainment venues, and printing centers. For instance, members can get 10% off their bill at Sichuan, 12% off printing services at Zee Zee Copy, 30% off plus one large bucket of golf balls at Tilden Park Golf Course, and 10% off for karaoke at Music Box Karaoke.
