Summary

Delta Upsilon at UC Berkeley is one of many fraternity chapters of its kind, with a total of 76 chapters nationally in various universities across the United States. Delta Upsilon prides itself in being the first non-secret fraternity in the US Greek Community, and proudly proclaims a mission statement of building better men for a global society through service, leadership development, and lifelong personal growth within its diverse membership.

History

DU was established on November 4, 1834 by 30 students from Williams College. Together they coined the phrase “Anti-Secret Confederation” (ASC), and formed an alliance with other non-secret groups from Union, Middlebury, and Amherst College. It was at the ASC convention of 1864 that the name Delta Upsilon was adopted. At the turn of the Century after a strong period of growth in the states, DU was incorporated in the State of New York in 1909. The UC Berkeley DU chapter was founded in 1896. However, a fire claimed the house in the 1920s, causing the chapter to relocate to Warring St, where DU continues to thrive today.

Vision

Delta Upsilon stands by its founding motto of “Justice; our foundation,” which alludes to the political and social environment of American culture at the time of its founding. Its vision of Building better men is coupled which its four founding principles: Development of Character, Promotion of Friendship, Diffusion of Liberal Culture, and the Advancement of Justice.

Events

Rush Season for the UC Berkeley Chapter for potential members begins in the first week of each fall and spring academic semester. Rush is an important time where members get to meet potential admits and decide whether or not they would be an appropriate fit for the chapter. DU at Berkeley is also very involved in the surrounding community, regularly participating in philanthropic events and fundraisers to raise money and awareness for various social issues. In the spring semester, DU at Berkeley boasts its annual Singapore Sling social event. Friends and classmates from all over campus are invited into the house for a festive, jungle-esque celebration to commemorate the academic year and honor the graduating seniors.
