The University of California, Berkeley although world renowned for it’s academic merits and esteemed noble prize earning faculty is also known for standing it’s ground and protesting in the face of injustice. The keystone XL project is the creation of a pipeline, which would transport 830,000 barrels of crude oil per day from western Canada to Nebraska. Though the United States department of State claim the environmental impact of the pipeline’s environmental effects would be minor, however other such as the students of UC Berkeley disagrees. The keystone project can result in climate brought by damaging emissions, forest destruction, harm indigenous population by disturbing habitats at the extraction point as well as any lasting environmental harm that can come from any spills that can come in the pipelines later or near future. The keystone project however of all its possible environmental hazards is most opposed for it’s utilization of fracking; during this process, methane gas and toxic chemicals leach out from the system and contaminate nearby groundwater. Only 30-50% of the fracturing fluid is recovered, the rest of the toxic fluid is left in the ground and is not biodegradable. The waste fluid is left in open-air pits to evaporate, releasing harmful volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere, creating contaminated air, acid rain, and ground level ozone. The voices of Berkeley students have been stated wide and clear that they have strong opposition against the Keystone XL project. Such a strong opinion in fact that students have not only created blogs and forums aiding in the creation of a but have had organized rallies that range from marching in the rain to candle light gatherings. In fact UC Berkley’s own officially recognized student government the ASUC Senate’s University and External Affairs Committee approved a bill that opposes the construction of Keystone XL.
